Can Chinese Tourists Save The World?

Ingemar Fredriksson, the author of a new book about Chinese tourists (the largest demographic in tourism) thinks so

December 9th, 2020 - According to UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) tourism accounts for 10% of global GDP and 1 in 10 jobs in the world. And China is the world’s largest market for outbound travel with its outbound travelers skyrocketing from 4.5 million in 2000 to 150 million in 2018, according to a 2019 report from the same organization.

The Chinese are the largest demographic in tourism and are growing fast (despite less than 10 percent having a passport) and are big spenders. On average, a Chinese tourist will spend up to US$6,700 per trip they make to the States, about 50% more than the average international visitor in the US. And according to Visit Britain every 22 additional Chinese visitors supports one additional job.

Asked if this is a really bad time to publish a book about Chinese tourists, author Ingemar Fredriksson said “Enough countries are taking a pragmatic approach, and some are already started to open up to Chinese tourists, like Thailand and Singapore. Also, this is the ideal time to invest in knowledge on how to earn money from the largest demographic in tourism since 2012 and for many years to come.”

And lack of knowledge is, according to the author, the main reason that the tourism industry cannot utilise the full potential of the business opportunity presented. The book gives a comprehensive overview of what differs, why it differs and how it can be addressed. This covers everything from culture and general behaviour to food and drink, what they want to do and buy and even payment preferences. There is also a section about internet and social media along with description of Chinese holidays.

Fredriksson believes that the book is suitable for "..every level in the tourism industry, from authorities to SMEs, from managers to employees".

Fredriksson is a Swedish born author with long-standing experience in management, business development and marketing gained in both family-owned businesses and large international groups. He has held senior group management, board member and chairman positions in his 30-year business career. Fredriksson has published four business books, which have all appeared on the top list in their category and they have all received positive reviews in Swedish media.
